| Looking Forward to the New School Year |
Parents, Guardians & Staff,
When I think back to March of 2020, I am amazed at the challenges we faced and what we accomplished. And a year ago we were processing different information from several health and governmental agencies to determine if we would even be able to open our schools.
Now, a year later, after an incredible amount of resilience, learning, pivoting and yes, successfully operating schools, we plan to begin the 2021-22 school year as we would pre-pandemic. We recognize some aspects may look a little different and we also know some families are watching news reports and social media posts and wondering what our schools will look like on August 18th. While I do not have all of the answers and things are changing daily, here is what I can tell you.
At this time, options for school districts have been significantly limited by Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order, so Eanes ISD cannot legally require masks or restrict activities in our buildings. In addition, the State will not fund a remote learning option. Other districts receiving federal funds may offer a form of remote learning, but we are not able to do that, other than limited homebound instruction offered for significant medical conditions.
Per the current mandate, Eanes ISD plans to return to 100% in-person learning for the 2021-22 school year. Face coverings will not be required for staff, students or visitors. An individual may choose to wear a mask, if desired.
We are monitoring local health conditions closely. I, along with other area superintendents, am meeting weekly with Austin Public Health (APH), Travis County and City of Austin officials. We also are waiting to receive guidance from the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
While the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) both recommend individuals 2-years-old and older who are not fully vaccinated continue to wear masks indoors, Eanes ISD does not have the legal authority to enforce that requirement. We will respect and encourage any student or staff member who chooses to wear a mask to do so.
We will continue to monitor and reassess as conditions dictate, with direction from TEA and the State of Texas. We will share updates with families as they become available.

Cuando pienso en marzo de 2020, me asombran los desafíos que enfrentamos y lo que logramos. Y hace un año estábamos procesando información diferente de varias agencias gubernamentales y de salud para determinar si podríamos abrir nuestras escuelas.
Ahora, un año después, después de una increíble cantidad de resiliencia, aprendizaje, pivotamiento y sí, escuelas operativas con éxito, planeamos comenzar el año escolar 2021-22 como lo haríamos antes de una pandemia. Reconocemos que algunos aspectos pueden verse un poco diferentes y también sabemos que algunas familias están viendo informes de noticias y publicaciones en las redes sociales y se preguntan cómo serán nuestras escuelas el 18 de agosto. Si bien no tengo todas las respuestas y las cosas cambian a diario, esto es lo que puedo decirles.
En este momento, las opciones para los distritos escolares se han visto limitadas significativamente por Orden ejecutiva del gobernador Greg Abbott, por lo que Eanes ISD no puede exigir legalmente máscaras o restringir las actividades en nuestros edificios. Además, el Estado no financiará una opción de aprendizaje a distancia. Otros distritos que reciben fondos federales pueden ofrecer una forma de aprendizaje remoto, pero no podemos hacerlo, aparte de la instrucción limitada en el hogar que se ofrece para afecciones médicas importantes.

Yo, junto con otros superintendentes de área, me reúno semanalmente con funcionarios de Austin Public Health (APH), el condado de Travis y la ciudad de Austin. También estamos esperando recibir orientación de la Agencia de Educación de Texas (TEA).
